Jaysen’s Story

by Carol Cook

My son Jaysen experienced interrupted SIDs at six months of age. As a result, he has brain damage, seizures and behavioral disorders. I am a single mother and kept him at home for 17 years. I then placed him in a group home where he received good care for a while. The providers tried, however as time went on, serious issues arose.

My concerns and suggestions about Jaysen’s care were never addressed sufficiently. There were no behavioral specialties to help him. It was also difficult to get neurologists and physicians who would accept Medicaid. After six years, I was told that they could no longer serve him because of his behavioral issues.  Where would I find an appropriate, compassionate group home? It was a very frightening time. Then I heard about the Austin State Supported Living Center and I was able to get Jaysen admitted in 2001.

The Living Center is amazing—they encouraged my input and welcomed me to be involved in his care. It was so comforting that my voice was being heard and that I was able to be involved in all the decision-making regarding his care. The wide range of services at the Living Center are comprehensive and cohesive, and there are personnel to manage his difficult behaviors.  He is able to attend enriching activities and workshops that bring him much happiness and provide a necessary routine.

His medical care has been exceptional. He has access to the infirmary and  dental clinic.  Additionally, nurses, doctors—including neurologists—visit on a regular basis.

During the past 19 years he has lived there, he has received the best care imaginable for someone with his complex needs. The staff are top-notch and his behavior is much improved. His health is good because of the routine medical care he receives.

I am so grateful for the great relationships he has with the staff and I have great peace knowing that he is well taken care of and happy.
