Nick’s Story

I will not sugar coat it. The pandemic has been hard on us, but I am amazed and pleased at how well Nick adjusted to these crazy times. As an individual with severe autism, Nick has always needed his routines kept consistent and predictable. Altering from the norm could bring on a violent outburst. However with the help of his familiar and skilled staff, he has made the adjustment remarkably well. I could not be more thankful to them.

The Living Centers were closed to visitors in March 2020 for the safety of the residents, many of whom are medically fragile. From the start of the lockdown, staff got Nick connected with me and the rest of his family via FaceTime. They used his funds to purchase an iPad which he can now use to FaceTime when he requests his Mom. Although I know he misses me, he calls for the pizza and burgers that I bring when I visit. I was able to leave meals at the gate for him and they were delivered.

On October 8th, I was reunited with Nick again in person! The Living Centers have a program that allows 2 essential caregivers for each resident. Nick’s father and I attended training and produced a negative Covid test result in order to visit. Nick was Mr. Mellow when he saw me, just like it was my regular weekly visit. We sat at a table under the trees across from his home and he ate his burger. I was happy to learn that he was back swimming at the Aquadome and going to his workshop. It was a peaceful hour. Then he waved goodbye just like it was any other day. Amazing!
